Mexico is a vibrant country—the perfect place for a riding vacation. When you go horseback riding in Mexico, you’ll find a wonderful mixture of riding and relaxation.
On your trip, you can visit haciendas, ranches, and local villages. Take trails through the unspoiled countryside where you’ll see some stunning scenery.
Equestrian History of Mexico
Horses were first brought to Mexico by the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés in 1519. The animals were crucial in his conquering of the Aztecs and other Indigenous peoples. They had never seen anyone ride an animal before.
Over the years, horses were adopted into the hacienda system of ranching. As time went on, they became an important part of Mexican culture.
Mexican Horse Breeds
The Azteca horse breed is a breed native to Mexico that descends from Andalusian, American Quarter Horse, and Mexican Criollo bloodlines. These horses are well-muscled and solid-colored. They were originally bred for charros, the traditional horsemen of Mexico, in 1972.
The Galiceno is another breed developed in Mexico. Even though the animals are small, they are considered horses, not ponies. They are used for many different things, including riding, packing, and light draft.
Mexican Horse Riding Holiday
So what will you do on your horse riding trip to Mexico? Great question.
You can visit the Lagos de Moreno region of Jalisco. This place has rich historical and natural heritage. Here you can explore two haciendas and ride along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, an old trade route that ran from Mexico City to San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico, also called the Silver Route. You’ll traverse sandy trails, mountains, and hills and view beautiful landscapes of alfalfa and corn.
Or you can explore a stunning canyon trail, seeing both the deepest and highest parts of the canyon. If you’d like to, you can rappel down the cliffs at the highest part. Cross the river and take in all the gorgeous flora and fauna of the area. You can even search for quartz in the river. This tour also includes a midnight right to a local village, an opportunity to ride in extreme darkness. But don’t worry. Horses have excellent night vision, and the guides are familiar with the trails.
If you’re hoping for a more relaxing vacation, you can have a luxury spa experience at a beautiful hacienda. The rancho was originally built in 1684, and a single family has owned it for generations. After being renovated, it was transformed into the lavish spa it is today with a range of treatments. Spend the day riding, then unwind at the hot tub in the evening.
