About Panama

Horse Riding in Panama: Mountain Trails and Rainforest Routes of the Central Highlands

Most visitors to Panama pass through Panama City and move on. The ones who ride horses tend to end up somewhere very different — in the mountain village of Santa Fe, in the Veraguas highlands, where the trails lead into backcountry Panama that few travelers ever see.
The Santa Fe region sits in Panama's central highlands, with riding trails climbing into higher elevations where the climate is noticeably cooler than on the coast. The landscape shifts constantly between open hillsides, dense tropical forest, river valleys and agricultural land. Riding here means crossing clear mountain rivers on horseback, picking your way through rocky riverbeds, passing traditional homesteads and riding along the mountain crest of the continental divide with panoramic views stretching in both directions. On one side, the Santa María River valley. On the other, the edge of the Santa Fe National Park — 72,000 hectares of protected tropical jungle, one of Panama's most biologically diverse protected regions.

What the riding is like

Trails in the Santa Fe area range from easy morning rides along the Bulaba River — suitable for families and complete beginners, including children — to full-day challenging routes along the continental divide designed for experienced riders comfortable with varied terrain. Multi-day itineraries build outward from a central base into different areas of the backcountry each day, covering foothills, river crossings, national park boundaries, waterfall hikes and mountain loops.
The horses used on Santa Fe trails are well-adapted to the local terrain — sure-footed on rocky riverbeds and calm in river crossings. River crossings are a regular feature of most routes, and riders occasionally stop for a swim. Depending on the season, trails pass through groves where you can pick fresh oranges or taste cacao straight from the pod.
Local guides bring deep knowledge of the landscape, flora, fauna and history of the region. Some tours are specifically noted as solo-friendly and female-led — check individual tour pages for details.

History and culture along the trails

The highlands around Santa Fe have deep historical roots. This land was home to Ngäbe communities and the legendary chief Urracá, who led a long resistance against Spanish colonization in the region. Riding through the valleys and hillsides here, you pass through land that was central to that history. The region also has a living agricultural culture — organic coffee farms, traditional homesteads and small communities where traditional farming remains an important part of local life.
The tours above offer several ways to experience Panama's central highlands, from relaxed family-friendly rides to challenging mountain routes along the continental divide.
