About Armenia

Horseback Riding in Armenia: Canyons, Forests and Medieval Trails of the Lori Region

Armenia is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and nowhere does that history feel more present than in the northern Lori region. The landscape here is defined by two great river systems — the Debed and the Dzoraget — which have carved deep, forested canyons through the highlands over millennia. Riding these trails, you move through terrain that feels genuinely ancient: limestone cliffs, oak forests, alpine meadows, and mountain creeks that you cross on horseback.
What makes riding in Lori unusual is the combination of wilderness and history along the same routes. Medieval monasteries appear on canyon rims and hillsides throughout the region — some dating back to the 7th century, others built during the rule of the Zakarid princes in the 12th and 13th centuries. You might pass a khachkar cemetery in the morning and canter across open ridge trails in the afternoon. It's a combination that's hard to find anywhere else.

What the riding is like

Trails in the Lori region run through varied terrain: forested mountain paths, cultivated valley fields, riverside tracks and high ridgelines with panoramic views. Daily riding typically runs 3 to 5 hours, with picnic lunches in the countryside and overnight camps or small lodges in the wilderness. River crossings are a regular part of many routes — a practical detail worth keeping in mind when packing for the trip.
Riding experience required depends on the route. The shortest 2-day itinerary is beginner-friendly, while the longer valley expeditions are better suited to intermediate riders comfortable spending full days in the saddle. None of the current tours require advanced riding experience.
Wildlife in the region adds to the experience — the forests are home to brown bears, Caucasian red deer, grey wolves and foxes, and over 200 bird species pass through during migration, including griffon vultures.

Where You'll Stay and Eat

Most tours use a mix of camping tents and small lodges set in the wilderness. One tour includes a glass lodge with a panoramic view over the Dzoraget Canyon. Meals are prepared using locally grown produce, including fresh vegetables, native cheeses, traditional bread, and regional wines often served outdoors. This is not resort-style comfort, but it suits the nature of the trips well.
