Wanda Wilcox, rancher and back country guide, exemplifies the pioneer spirit of the American West. She was recognized by the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame as a woman who displays courage and the strength of her convictions. They made a documentary called “Kinship with the Land” and it features her relationship with the land from ranching and working with animals to her community spirit and zeal for preserving her heritage. This hard working family enjoys sharing their love of the ranching way of life and the sheer beauty of the Beartooth Wilderness.

Route details

Day 1
Arrival & Ride to Midway Camp

Load up and head to the trail head which is an hour from the ranch near Nye, Montana. It is seven miles from the trail head to the first camp. The ride to “Midway Camp” will take 4-5 hours including a break for lunch. *We do recommend doing a ride with us the day before on the ranch, if at all possible. This gives you a chance to get acquainted with your horse and make sure that all equipment is fitting correctly.

The horses do most of the work, but the hours in the saddle will likely make you saddle sore if you unaccustomed to riding and you may want to walk parts to stretch your legs. One should be in good health

This particular trip reach 9600 feet and though not as high as some places, if you are coming from sea level you will feel it. There are chances of meeting wildlife, so precautions are taken with food and everything must be stored properly and not left out at anytime unattended. There are no bathroom facilities

REQUIRED ITEMS

A personal duffel bag with following items is required for the pack trip:

  • Jeans;
  • Sweatshirt;
  • Jacket or parka;
  • Socks;
  • Tennis shoes;
  • Boots or riding shoes;
  • Hat or cap;
  • Rain gear and wet boots.
  • Small towel;
  • Chapstick;
  • Sunscreen;
  • Personal hygiene items (biodegradable soap, toothpaste);
  • Water bottles;
  • Sunglasses;
  • Flashlight;
  • Any medicines needed.

  • Fishing gear (waders, appropriate flies, poles – poles in hard cases and break down poles are best).

We do not provide alcoholic beverages, but you may bring your own. Plastic bottles work best.
