Cundinamarca to Boyacá Heritage Ride

Transfer to the starting point near the beautiful Sisga Reservoir, where your horses and guides await. The ride begins through the picturesque Sisga River Valley, following scenic trails surrounded by rolling hills and crystal-clear waterways.

Continue towards Suesca Lake, enjoying magnificent views across the northern Bogotá Savanna and the distant Tominé Reservoir. After crossing Cajones Mountain at approximately 3,200 metres above sea level, descend towards the charming colonial town of Cucunubá.

Known throughout Colombia for its traditional wool weaving and handmade textiles, Cucunubá offers a warm welcome and a glimpse into authentic rural life.

Today's route traverses the beautiful landscapes of the Ubaté Valley, passing the scenic Cucunubá and Fúquene Lagoons, two of the region’s most important natural landmarks.

Ride through peaceful countryside, agricultural lands, and traditional mining communities while learning about the local culture and economy. The route passes areas known for their artisanal coal mines and stunning rural scenery before reaching the Guachetá region.

Throughout the day, enjoy panoramic views of wetlands, mountains, and fertile valleys that have sustained local communities for generations.

After breakfast, continue towards Ráquira, one of Colombia’s most famous artisan towns and a centre for traditional pottery and ceramics.

The route passes through magnificent centuries-old native oak forests, creating one of the most scenic sections of the expedition. As you approach the destination, the dramatic landscapes of the Desert of La Candelaria come into view.

Arrive at the historic Monastery of La Candelaria, founded in 1604 by Augustinian monks. This remarkable religious complex is recognized as the first Augustinian monastery established in the Americas and remains an important spiritual and historical site.

Depart the monastery and ride across the stunning Desert of La Candelaria, an extraordinary landscape of rolling hills, rocky terrain, and semi-arid scenery unlike anywhere else in Colombia.

Continue towards the fertile valley surrounding Villa de Leyva, passing through traditional farms and beautiful countryside. Founded in 1572, Villa de Leyva is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful colonial towns in South America.

Upon arrival, admire its whitewashed buildings, cobblestone streets, and historic atmosphere before enjoying dinner in one of the town’s renowned restaurants.

Spend the day exploring the spectacular countryside surrounding Villa de Leyva. Ride along historic trails through rolling hills, rural farmland, and beautiful river valleys that preserve the atmosphere of colonial Colombia.

Enjoy a relaxing lunch beside a scenic river on the route towards Gachantivá, surrounded by peaceful landscapes and traditional farming communities. This day offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the region’s natural beauty while enjoying excellent riding terrain.

Return to Villa de Leyva in the afternoon and enjoy free time to stroll through its charming streets or relax at your accommodation.

This morning is dedicated to exploring the cultural and architectural treasures of Villa de Leyva. Visit the town’s famous Main Square, considered the largest colonial square in Colombia, and admire the impressive church that overlooks the plaza.

Continue to important historical landmarks including the Casa del Cabildo, the Casa de Nariño, where independence leader Antonio Nariño spent his final years, and the historic Claustro de San Agustín, now home to the Humboldt Institute.

After the guided city tour, return to Bogotá and check into your hotel for your final night in Colombia.
