Your journey begins in Golyam Izvor, a picturesque village in the heart of the Teteven district. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, this hidden treasure invites you to discover the authentic charm of rural life. From here, you will ride along forest paths to the Ridge of Lisets Mountain, where a splendid panoramic view of the Teteven Balkan unfolds. Riding through a century-old beech forest, you’ll approach Glozhen Monastery - situated high up on a mountain under sheer cliffs, in a truly spectacular setting. Its dramatic silhouette rising above the rocks is among Bulgaria’s most striking sights. After a short walk inside, you will head back to Golyam Izvor.

Route details

The tour starts with pick-up from your hotel in Sofia by your guide, followed by a transfer to the village of Golyam Izvor (about a one-hour drive). After saddling the horses, we head along forest paths to the ridge of Lisets Mountain. The ride continues through a century-old beech forest as we approach the Glozhen Monastery. After a short visit inside, we return to Golyam Izvor, where you will be transferred back to Sofia.

The tour was excellent, with highlights including Sarajevo, Mostar, Ohrid, and more. The itinerary was relaxed, perfect for a group tour, with no rushing. A big thank you to Bobby, our driver, for keeping us safe back in Sofia. And special thanks to our Tour Leader, Georgi, who was incredibly accommodating, helpful, and always available when needed. I recently enjoyed a 3-day horse riding holiday in the Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria and it was fantastic! The horses were well-trained and suitable for riders of all levels. The scenery was breathtaking, whether through villages, forests, or along mountain ridges. Accommodation at Guest House in Lopyan was clean and comfortable, with delicious food that accommodated my vegetarian diet. Our guide, Nikolay, was friendly, punctual, and provided excellent service. Overall, it was a wonderful short holiday in a beautiful country at a very reasonable price.
