Exploring the Wineries in Umbria

Following breakfast, we start our adventure. The horses are carefully loaded into the horse box while riders are transfered by car on a picturesque 30-minute journey to Fonti del Clitunno. Here, we prepare our horses and commence our ride along expansive paths meandering through olive groves and vineyards. The landscape unfolds in all its splendor, offering breathtaking views at every turn, with opportunities for invigorating trots and canters along the way.

After a few hours in the saddle, we pause for a well-deserved break, arriving at our first winery, or "cantina" in Italian. Here, we indulge in a brief tour and a tasting session, savoring perhaps some effervescent spumante or a glass of locally renowned white Grechetto or Trebbiano. 

A delectable lunch, cooked with the finest local produce, awaits us before we continue our journey towards Montefalco, the viticultural heart of Umbria. Surrounded by medieval rampart walls and adorned with Romanesque churches, Montefalco offers a glimpse into the region's rich heritage.

Our accommodations for the next two nights await at a cozy agritourism just outside Montefalco. Here, we settle our horses and retrieve our belongings, conveniently delivered beforehand. 

The evening unfolds with a delightful dinner and a restful overnight stay.

After breakfast, we saddle up and head towards Bevagna, which beckons across the hills in the distance. Originally an Etruscan settlement, this small stone-walled town subsequently became a Roman municipium, called Mevania and mentioned by Pliny, before being incorporated into the Duchy of Spoleto, and later, the Papal States.

Our next stop will be at a cantina that specializes in the rich red wines for which this area has become justly famous – Montefalco Rosso DOC and Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG. There will be a chance to try them both, as well as to see how they are made and aged in oaken vats. This will also be the stopping place for lunch.

From there, in mid-afternoon, we will ride along more gentle trails through vineyards and back to the agritourism, to untack and settle in the horses, before a shower and dinner.

Today we leave the wine-growing area and head towards another of southern Umbria’s treasures – the beautiful mountains of Monti Martani, famous for their ancient fossils. 

Our route will take us through a number of picturesque villages, and there are some trails for trotting and cantering. 

We’ll have a picnic lunch in a shady spot before loading the horses into the horsebox and being driven back to the base.
