Three Islands Trail

The journey follows pleasant narrow roads to the Vråby nature area. You can experience delightful smooth tolt and comfortable gallops. Along the way, it's common to see deer grazing and observing the riders as they go by. Then, the route leads across the heath and into the Kirkeby plantation, which offers numerous enjoyable riding paths. The ride also includes passing Spietsbierg, the highest point on Rømø.

Riding: 2 hours.

Today, you can enjoy a ride on Sønderstrand on the western side of Rømø. This beautiful sandy beach extends along the entire island and offers great chances of finding amber due to its open and flat terrain. The northern part of the beach is restricted as a military zone, but the rest is open for public use. The view of the sand and sea stretches for miles.

Riding: 3 hours.

You can follow the tranquil forest paths to reach the Vråby nature area, then continue through the dunes to reach the expansive beach. Riding along the shoreline, the solid ground is perfect for beach riding.

Riding: 4 hours.

Today, you will have the opportunity to explore some of Denmark's most unique and untouched natural areas on horseback. At Koresand, you can witness precious gems, seals, a diverse bird population and enjoy the absence of tourists and cars. 

You gather at the stable, groom the horses and load them onto the horse trailer. After that, you drive to Mandø farm, where the horses are unloaded, saddled, and then you embark on a ride through the town, across the embankment and out onto Koresand, taking the tides into account.

Koresand is a roughly 24 square kilometer sandbank located in the Wadden Sea southwest of Mandø, also known as the wet desert due to its expansive sandy terrain. Despite its increasing size each year, the area lacks vegetation or permanent dunes, as it remains submerged during storms. The vast expanse of flat sand offers a sense of boundless freedom as you walk, tolt and gallop, with uninterrupted views and no people in sight. This makes Koresand an ideal habitat for hundreds of seals and thousands of birds. 

After approximately 3.5 hours of riding, you arrive back at the farm and enjoy some delicious sandwiches together. The horses are then loaded into the trailers and you head back home. In the evening, you watch a video at the bar.

Riding: 3,5 hours.

Today, you have the opportunity to join the longest ride of the week, which is a delightful experience on the comfortable Icelandic horse, known for its suitability for long rides. 

Starting from the stable, you will travel along winding forest paths at a smooth and steady pace. A canter will take you across fields before reaching Sønderstrand via the sand dunes. 

Once on the beach, you can enjoy another canter, and at certain times of the year, you may find that you are the only one there, leaving behind only your horse's hoof prints. During peak season, the beach may be bustling with activity. 

Upon reaching Lakolk, the island's beach town, you will dismount and have lunch. After a well-deserved break, you will remount and continue your ride through the dunes, across the road and back into the woods. Along the winding paths, you will experience both the tolt and canter gaits before finally returning to the stable.

Riding: 5 hours.

Besides the picturesque island of Rømø, visitors also have the opportunity to explore the island of Mandø. 

With only 35 residents, Mandø is very quiet in the winter. The island is home to an equestrian center with a small farm, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the nearby island on horseback. 

The exact start time for the ride cannot be determined until 1-2 days before due to the tide. In the morning, the horses are prepared and transported to Vester Vedstad, where they are unloaded, saddled and the adventure begins. 

The route is marked by trees in the seabed, guiding the horses through the water. This historic road is not suitable for cars as it is rarely completely dry. The tides are extremely important to consider so as not to get stuck on the island. Therefore, it's crucial to explore the island before the water level increases. 

If the water is too high, transportation by horse will be arranged to take you home on the new Ebbevej, Lånningsvejen, where cars can also travel. It's recommended to wear rain trousers and rubber boots, even if it's not raining (these can be borrowed). 

Upon circling the entire island and riding up the embankment, you can have a panoramic view of the entire island. The journey includes crossing moors and riding along the beach, passing through Mandø's only Mandø City. Afterward, you'll arrive at the farm for lunch and relaxation. The horses will then be loaded onto trailers and you'll be driven home before the water rises. It's a full day of adventure and nature experiences. You'll sleep especially well tonight.
