Come join us for 2 days of riding within Riding Mountain National Park. We bring all the fixing for a delicious BBQ on an open fire and breakfast the next morning. We spend the night in one of the rustic backcountry campsite in the national park – a real adventure! We supply everything you need (tent, sleeping bags, food etc). Everything we need will be carried in by our mule ‘Rena’ – space is limited, so be prepared to pack very light!

This camping trip on horseback includes a 3.5 hr ride on the first day, a night at the rustic campsite Gunn Lake in the backcountry of Riding Mountain National Park, and a 3.5 hr ride on the second day.

Some experience with horses and riding is recommended for our overnight trips – or a good fitness level comes in handy. We would advise you not to choose this ride for children

Hot tip: Fall is the absolute best time for camping trips to the Park!

Having grown up in Germany, I am now living in Canada for almost 40 years. Since 2002, my family and I settled in the wonderful Province of Manitoba where we run a ranch offering trail rides and accommodation in a beautiful setting. I am responsible for booking our tours and look forward to greeting you on the ranch.

Route details

Day 1
Riding In

After meeting at the ranch (ideally, you would arrive around 11 am), we pack your last things into our packing boxes. You will get to know your horse for this adventure, load everybody into the trailer, and drive all together to our starting point in Riding Mountain National Park.

Usually, we will have light lunch on the parking lot before starting our ride of ~3.5h to Gunn Lake campsite. Once we arrive at the campsite, we will bring the horses to their corral and set up our camp. You will have time to stroll to Gunn Lake and enjoy the park's tranquility

We have a rustic supper over an open campfire, can chat about everything and nothing, and once everybody gets tired, we head to our tents to get a good night's sleep.

Tour provider's comments

Be aware that we are camping in a regular tent on the ground in the backcountry of a national park with potential wildlife (from mosquitoes to bears) around us.

It's important to know

Personal equipment you need for the tour

Everything we take in will be carried by our mule Rena. While she is big and strong, it is still required to pack very light

Your belongings should roughly fit into one side of a regular-sized saddle bag (rain jacket and sleeping bag not included) - about 30 cm x 30 cm x 10 cm

  • One set of dry clothes;
  • A few snacks if you want to;
  • Toiletries you need (reminder: no running water anyway!);
  • Bring a rain jacket, sunscreen and mosquito repellent.

Ask us if you need more information.
