Get ready for a unique horse riding vacation experience! The Makgadikgadi Salt pans are a bright white desert, prompting the permanent game to retreat to grass islands with water holes. This is the perfect time for exhilarating horse rides, including night gallops towards a distant campfire for stargazing. Various wildlife can be easily spotted on the grass islands.

The itinerary typically includes three nights at the luxurious Camp Kalahari, with a camping experience in the pans among wildlife and stars. The highlights consist of viewing Africa's largest and most famous baobabs, interacting with habituated meerkats and tracking with the local San people.

My parents, both born and raised in Africa, share a passion for exploring the untamed landscapes of the continent on horseback. Together as a family we have led horseback safaris in various African countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Since 1993, our family has operated our own horse safari business, starting in Malawi's Nyika National Park and later moving to Botswana in 2008. My father David, with over 30 years of guiding experience, is highly regarded as one of Africa's top horse guides and leads most of the trips personally. We combine our love for horses with a deep appreciation for the wilderness on our safaris.

Route details

Day 1
Camp Kalahari

Upon your arrival by air or road, you will be welcomed by your host and guide David and taken to Camp Kalahari, situated amidst acacias and Mokolwane palms on Brown Hyaena Island, near the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and the Makgadikgadi-Nxai Pans National Park in Botswana.

The camp features a central library, living and dining area with a unique blend of African furniture, textiles, campaign-style pieces and colonial antiques for relaxation in the tranquil surroundings. Guests can cool off in the swimming pool or relax in the thatched pavilion.

In the afternoon light, guests can enjoy an introductory horse ride to explore the area's beauty and match horses with riders. Afterward, return to camp for sundowners, dinner and to secure the horses close by before the Kalahari lions begin their nightly activities.

For capable and healthy riders. This is a big game area and you should be able to stay on your horse and stay calm and in control in all situations.

Tack: trail saddles/English Wintec GP's.

Breed: mostly crossbreeds with some purebred Appaloosas.

Children are allowed to participate but they MUST be advanced riders.
