The High Country feels different from the saddle — forests seem taller, rivers sound closer, and the valleys open slowly as your horse finds the trail. This half-day ride takes you into the mountain landscapes of North East Victoria, where lush pastures, birdlife, and alpine air shape the day.

You’ll ride through old stock routes, river crossings, fern gullies, and into Alpine National Park, with experienced guides leading the way. Horses are chosen to suit riders, and basic instruction, helmets, and oilskin coats are included if needed. This ride is best for confident riders ready to try trot and canter.

Bring long pants, suitable boots, and a reusable water bottle. Join the ride and see the High Country from its most natural pace!

Rides will be subject to a 12% price increase during high season, holiday weekends, and public holidays.

Tour Guide, Camp Cook and Dad. My parents settled in Tawonga with my brother and me in 1986. They arrived with a truck load of horses and a vision for a family business that would honour the traditions of the High Country horse and offer unique quality visitor experiences. That vision still drives our family business. Our farm is truly the home of horseback adventures, our family sanctuary, and for the visitor, a country home away from home.

Tour provider's comments

Strongly recommended for riders with some riding experience or confidence to give the trot and canter a go. If your lack of confidence or riding experience limits you to only walking on this ride, you may be required to dismount and be picked up by management at your own expense.

My partner and I visited this place shortly after the New Year. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there in every aspect. The family do an amazing job of welcoming guests and creating a homely atmosphere. The accommodations were charming and cozy, providing a peaceful retreat. The six rooms were thoughtfully designed to blend with the surroundings and were constructed using family designs, showcasing a labor of love. Instead of air conditioning, the rooms were naturally cooled at night while windows and shutters remained closed during the day, a more cost-effective and eco-friendly approach that we appreciated. The highlight was the communal living area with board games, a record player, and a long table where guests could relax and talk. Lin graciously prepared delicious homemade meals. Breakfasts were impressive too, featuring fresh produce, fruits, and homemade bread. Both my partner and I enjoyed horse riding, witnessing the excellent care provided to the horses and the exceptional guidance offered to riders of varying skill levels. It was a perfect getaway, and we will definitely return.
