What if Mongolia opened with drums, racing horses, dust in the air, and a stadium full of color — and then led you out into valleys, dunes, monasteries, and hot springs? This journey begins at the height of Naadam, when the country feels especially alive. You’ll step straight into Mongolia’s biggest festival, watch the Opening Ceremony, see archers in embroidered deels, and stand by the track as young jockeys race across the steppe at Hui Doloon Khudag.
Then the road turns west. You’ll ride camels in Bayan Gobi, visit nomadic families, follow the wide landscapes of the Orkhon Valley to its waterfall, and soak in the warm waters of Tsenkher. The route also takes you to Karakorum and Erdene Zuu Monastery, to a quiet evening by Ugii Lake, to Hustai National Park in search of wild Takhi horses, and to the rock formations and mountain air of Terelj. Before departure, there is still time for the giant Genghis Khan Statue, Gandan Monastery, and one more evening of Mongolian music and performance in Ulaanbaatar.
The pace is comfortable, the route varied, and the overnight stays are split between city hotels, tourist ger camps, a lakeside ger camp, and a camp near Hustai. With private transport, festival access, cultural visits, and nature woven into one route, this is a rich and beautifully balanced way to see Central Mongolia. Join the journey while the steppe is green and Naadam fills the summer with movement!
