There is a Kazakh legend that when God created the world, he gave the area now known as Kazakhstan only the endless steppe. The people were disappointed and implored God to bestow some natural beauty on their land. Answering their prayers, God gave them the beautiful oasis that is the Burabay region.

Nicknamed the Switzerland of Kazakhstan, Burabay is blanketed with lush green meadows and verdant forests, home to hundreds of animals and birds and crystal blue lakes which are well stocked with myriad species of fish. Visitors flock for the clean air, picturesque views and to participate in invigorating activities such as hiking and swimming. The cliffs and mountains are moulded by the weather into fascinating shapes, each of which has its own legend.

Hi! My name is Alima, I am the owner of the stables and the horses. I come from a family of horse shepherds and breeders. I was born in Kazakhstan and spent some time studying and working abroad. On top of being a professor at the local university, I am a passionate advocate for Kazakhstan’s rich heritage and equestrian traditions. At our ranch, which is a family business, we continue to honor the deep connection between humans and horses—a bond that has been at the heart of Kazakh life for centuries. We take pride in offering immersive experiences, from leisurely horseback rides across the stunning steppe to cultural tours that dive into the history and traditions of the region. We have been conducting tours across Kazakhstan since 2019. As an avid equestrian and storyteller, I aim to share not only the beauty of the Kazakh steppe but also the tales of its people, history, and vibrant nomadic spirit. Whether guiding you through the sprawling steppe or the bustling landmarks of Astana, my enthusiasm and hospitality will ensure an unforgettable experience. With years of experience in hosting tours and a deep appreciation for the bond between humans and horses, I bring a personal touch to every journey. My perspective blends an intimate knowledge of Kazakh culture with a global outlook, ensuring that each guest feels welcomed, informed and inspired.

Tour provider's comments

The Burabay National Park horse tour offers an unforgettable journey through one of Kazakhstan’s most picturesque natural landscapes. The program is moderately challenging, designed for both confident beginners and intermediate riders seeking an immersive cultural and nature experience. Over the course of six days, you will ride through rolling hills, dense pine forests, and along pristine lakeshores, with daily rides lasting between 6 to 8 hours.

Safety Rules

Your safety and well-being are our highest priorities. All rides are guided by experienced horsemen who know the horses and the region’s trails. Before setting off, every participant receives a detailed safety briefing and instruction on how to handle their horse. Riders are required to:

  • Wear helmets at all times while riding
  • Follow the guide’s instructions on speed, distance, and terrain
  • Approach wildlife and other horses with caution
  • Dismount only when instructed by the guide
  • Communicate any discomfort or concerns immediately

Essential Skills

The tour is suitable for both experienced and novice riders. However, participants should be prepared to:

  • Spend several hours in the saddle each day
  • Ride at a leisurely to moderate pace over varied terrain
  • Navigate occasional steeper trails and forest paths
  • Have basic knowledge of starting, stopping, and turning their horse

On Days 1-2, there are introductory rides where guests can become familiar with their horse and practice riding skills under the guidance of the team.

Potential Risks

While the routes are carefully planned, the natural landscape of Burabay presents some challenges, including:

  • Uneven terrain in forested areas
  • Steep sections on trails leading to Mount Kokshetau
  • Occasional wildlife sightings (deer, foxes, birds of prey)
  • Hot summer temperatures, especially during midday rides
  • The possibility of sudden weather changes

Our guides always assess the group’s riding ability and adjust the pace accordingly. A support vehicle is available nearby in case of emergencies, and guides carry first aid kits and radio communication devices at all times.

Safety & Comfort

With experienced guides, well-trained horses, and a carefully planned itinerary, this tour offers a balance of adventure and comfort. Whether galloping across meadows or enjoying a peaceful lakeside ride, our team ensures that every guest feels safe, confident, and inspired by the breathtaking beauty of Burabay National Park.

I was fortunate to spend a night at this amazing equestrian center in Kazakhstan, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The horses are not only beautiful but also friendly, and the two people running the center are incredibly kind and welcoming. They made every effort to ensure our comfort from the moment I arrived, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The center also features a guesthouse where I stayed. The guesthouse is spacious, with a large bathroom and sauna, and the food served is typical of Kazakh cuisine. Every dish was absolutely delicious! I highly recommend this riding center to anyone seeking an incredible adventure with horses in an authentic setting.

My experience at this ranch has been nothing short of extraordinary. It’s a true gem for anyone seeking an authentic Kazakh nomadic adventure. I initially came here to learn how to ride horses, and since then, I’ve returned every year from the Netherlands as a more experienced rider to reconnect with the breathtaking nature of the steppe. The warm welcome you receive makes you feel like part of the family, and this warmth has remained constant throughout my visits over the years. The ranch offers a variety of experiences, catering to both first-time riders and seasoned horse enthusiasts. You can explore the expansive and beautiful steppe on horseback, riding one of their magnificent, well-cared-for horses, who feel like family. The bond you create with the horses and the surrounding nature is truly special. In addition to riding, you can immerse yourself in Kazakh culture and lifestyle. The ranch provides unique accommodations, from staying in a traditional yurt under the stars in the summer to a cozy guesthouse available year-round. Both options offer a rustic yet comfortable experience, and you can unwind in the private sauna—a perfect way to relax after a day spent outdoors on horseback. They consistently serve delicious traditional home-cooked Kazakh meals and desserts made by a local lady, and each time I visit, I get to try something new. Tea is, of course, served in the traditional Kazakh manner—unlimited! What truly sets this ranch apart is its atmosphere. Every conversation with the owner is a deep exploration of Kazakhstan's history and traditions. You never feel like this is a "touristy" experience; it’s authentic, genuine, and full of heart. This is where you learn about true Kazakh life and culture, far removed from the commercialized versions many places offer. I cannot recommend this place highly enough for anyone seeking a meaningful, rejuvenating, and authentic experience in Kazakhstan. I eagerly anticipate my next trip there!

If you love horses, this place is definitely for you. However, don’t expect traditional music or attire. You can gallop across the stunning Steppe on horseback. The farm features a cozy guesthouse where they serve hearty meals like buckwheat, local apple pie, cabbage beetroot soup, fried rice with meat, and bread stuffed with mashed potatoes. The atmosphere is laid-back, allowing guests to work with the hosts to arrange their own itineraries, though it may take some time, and things might not always be perfectly organized. We enjoyed a leisurely two-hour ride to a yurt in a nearby village, but we had to wait an hour for someone to bring the key. Kazakh modern rural culture has its quirks. For instance, you drink from a bowl, and if the hosts want you to leave quickly, they'll fill it to the brim, prompting you to drink up and move on. If you only receive about two-thirds of a bowl, it means you’re welcome to stay longer. Don’t worry; you can always expect an unlimited refill!
