Tour provider's comments

This trail requires riders to be comfortable navigating varied terrain at all paces and to be physically fit enough to spend long hours in the saddle. While the majority of the ride will be at a walking pace to accommodate pack horses and challenging terrain, this adventure is not suitable for children. Teenagers who are competent and confident riders may be considered if booked as part of a private group.

Type of terrain: Mountain, mud, river crossing, high plateau, forest.

Riding time: 4 to 7 hours per day.

Horse Breed: A mix of quarter horse/ draft X, Yukon rustic horse, arab, fjord, halflinger. The horses are hardy and surefooted, fit for the mountains and rugged terrain and will reliably carry you on the trail. They range in height from 14.2hh to 16.2hh. On some of the steep ascents and descents it may be necessary to get off and lead the horses on foot.

Tack Type: Western

NOTE: You will be responsible for the care of your own horse (saddling, grooming etc) and involved in learning the techniques of horse packing. Hard hats are mandatory.

    about tour
The horses were ideal for the job they did. They were all good natured. The approach to horse management is very different to what we do at home and the horses were a healthy and happy herd. They did seem to spend very long periods without eating but did not seem to suffer as a result and were in good condition. The riding was slow (never more than a walk) but through challenging country with spectacular views. The days were full with packing up in the morning, long days riding with 1-2 hour lunches and then making camp in the evening and helping with the chores. We definitely slept well!

    about tour
The ride was in wilderness on a scale I couldn't have imagined. The terrain was steep, boggy or through quite dense brush at times. But the horses took you through it all and made it possible to spend all days without seeing another person who was not part of the group. Wide glacial valleys, high mountains, beautiful lakes, sub-alpine tundra and mixed boreal forest. Long days in the saddle, always at a walk (you couldn't go faster and no need!). An experience that will always live in my memory.
